My trip and treasures
Toastmasters of the evening, dear fellow members and most welcome guests!
Good evening! My name is Sigrid, and I come from 桃園. I am now a graduate
student in microbiology. I’m a girl who loves to travel and share. So today I
am going to share with you, the most unforgettable trip of mine.
In 2009, the last summer in my college life, I had an unforgettable graduation
travel with my friends. Since we regarded this journey as a milestone in our
life, we wanted to make it challenging, which would give us courage to face the
unpredictable future. Guess where we chose to leave our footprint? The answer is
all over Taiwan. This island breeds us for a long time, like a mother, so we wanted
understand it deeper. In our one-week-long trip, we rode motorcycles to pass
through every county in Taiwan. We met many impressive people or fantastic
things in this journey. All of them have taught me a lot. So let me introduce some
of them to you.
The first thing I should show you is the land of milk and honey. In Taiwan, every
crop is plump, just like this picture shows. The seas of rice and corn are both
rich. Under the blue sky, sparkle golden Wheat Sea surrounded with jade green
mountains. When you saw this scenery in front of you, the crop was not just food
on the table anymore; it was a living creature with great vitality. And not just crop
but fruits were plump and pretty. See, the island breed fruits that have amazing
size. Even insect is also huge.
The residents in this island are kind-hearted. When my friend had little traffic
accident during the travel, a couple took out a first-aid box to help my friend
immediately. In 苗栗, we met a man like Black Hand. He fixed our motorcycle
free of charge. Even though we were strangers, they still made great
efforts to help us. We also met people who pursued their dreams without
fears. One man built a house step by step by himself after he sold all his
properties. Another man committed himself to collect rare stones in the river
bank. These are all treasures to them that will be cherished forever.
The most special thing of our trip was the places we lived during the trip were all
temples!! In Taiwan, Taoism is a major religion to traditional family. There are a lot
of temples all over Taiwan. When we lived in the temples, we saw many believers
and complex ceremonies in the morning. At night, the temples became solemn
and peaceful with incense.
In this travel, we saw many amazing scenes. Some is so beautiful that you
cannot image. Like this picture, the morning twilight covered Taipei. And some is
worrisome that we used to ignore. This picture shows land subsidence. I was not
aware of this problem until I saw that. And we discovered many special towns in
the island, like this. Have you ever heard it?
Throughout the journey, we run into many trouble things like hurt, lose our way,
rainstorm and even pressures from family or school. But eventually we achieved
our goal. Maybe this travel is not worth mentioning like other heroic attempt. But
it teaches me a lot and gives me courage to face the future. The most important
thing is I understand I’m not alone. I know, even when my friends and I are not
together, this travel and my friends will be my treasures forever.
Toastmasters of the Evening.
